J&K’s 1st 24-hours Codathon begins at MIET

JAMMU, Oct 31: A first-of-its-kind 24 hours Codathon began today at Model Institute of Engineering and Technology (MIET), Kot Bhalwal.
A Codathon typically involves rigorous round-the-clock software development by participants. At MIET 35 students from across semesters and departments comprising 8 teams took on 8 challenging software projects on cutting-edge SMAC (Social, Mobility, Analytics and Cloud) technologies over 24 hours.
The event was sponsored by IBM making it the first and only industry-backed Codathon in the State of J&K. All the participants used the industry-leading IBM Bluemix development and deployment platform for developing advanced software projects.
Mani Madhukar, Manager, IBM Ecosystem Development Team, inaugurated the Codathon and expressed delight at MIET taking the lead and organizing the first-ever Codathon in J&K. MIET is also operating the IBM Center of Excellence since 2009, which offers students access to the latest technologies from IBM.
While welcoming Mani Madhukar and Prof Ankur Gupta, Joint Director, MIET, expressed confidence that the students would find the Codathon a transformative experience and build confidence in pushing the boundaries of personal achievement.
Some of the innovative projects completed during the Codathon were real-time traffic analysis, automated attendance and student tracking, mobile app for restaurant reservations, dynamic support-services provisioning, peer-to-peer chat server, m-governance, social network analysis and location-based recommender system.
The projects made use of advanced IBM services such as Watson for cognitive computing, DashDB for analytics, Alchemy for image analysis, Insights for Twitter, etc. The winning teams shall receive prizes worth Rs 40,000 from IBM.
Chairman, MIER, Dr Arun K Gupta, was also present on the occasion. The organizing committee of the event included Salim Qureshi, Dhrub Kumar, Sahil Sawhney, Lohit Kapoor, Nipun Sharma and Purnendu Prabhat.
