JKSAC delegation calls on Relief & Rehabilitation Minister

JAMMU, Mar 20: An 11-member delegation of Jammu Kashmir Sharnarthi Action Committee (JKSAC) led by its president, Gurdev Singh, called on Sayeed Basharat Ahmed Bukhari, Minister for Rehabilitation, Relief and Law and apprised him about the resentment brewing among the DPs of 1947 from PoK and other categories, who are awaiting their full and final settlement from last more than six decades.
While apprising the Minister in detail about the legitimate problems of DPs, Gurdev said that DPs have pinned great hope and expectations on the Coalition Government that it would take their matter on priority.
He also expressed DPs’ reservation regarding the package submitted by previous Government and recent recommendations made by JPC wherein DPs of 1947 from PoK have been equated with other categories of DPs particularly in respect of cash compensation to the tune of Rs 25 lakh or Rs 30 lakh each family.
The JKSAC president said that DPs of 1947 from PoK have suffered unparallel miseries and have a very unique case and have absolutely no similarity with any of the categories. He appealed both the parties in the Government not to follow the footsteps of packaged prepared by the previous Government and instead formulate a justified criteria for calculation of compensation for each category taking into consideration their physical and material loss.
Gurdev demanded Rs 50 lakh as one time settlement for each DP family of 1947 from PoK besides reservation in professional institutes and Central and State Government jobs. He also demanded that Displaced Persons Settlement Act of 1971 which was kept in abeyance by previous Government merely for political reasons, be implemented forthwith and issues of DPs pertaining to State Government be resolved accordingly.
The Minister assured the delegation that the Government is fully committed to sort out their issues on priority basis as it has already been kept in the CMP.
