JAMMU, May 11: Prof J P S Joorel has been elected as president of Jammu University Teachers Association (JUTA), elections of which were held today.
In a straight contest, Prof Joorel of the Statistics Department defeated Prof Avtar Singh Jasrotia with a margin of 50 votes. Prof Joorel secured 148 votes while his opponent was polled 98 votes.
Dr Satinder Kumar of the Law Department was elected as vice-president while Dr Vijay Saigal of the Law Department and Hema Gandotra of the Sociology Department have been elected for the post of general secretary and joint secretary, respectively.
Total 248 votes were polled in the JUTA elections and there was a straight contest for the top four positions as Dr Pardeep Kumar of the English Department was already declared unopposed as treasurer.
This is for the second time that Prof J P Singh Joorel of the Statistics Department has been elected as JUTA president.
For the post of vice-president, Dr Satinder secured 128 votes and defeated Dr Kavita Suri with a margin of nine votes. Dr Vijay Saigal got 147 votes and was elected as general secretary while his opponent Dr Jaspal Singh got only 99 votes. For the post of joint Secretary, Dr Hema Gandotra secured 139 votes while her opponent Dr Savita Nayyar got 105 votes.
Mubark Singh of the Education Department was election commissioner for the JUTA elections.
