JU Academic Council approves key proposals to strengthen academic framework

JAMMU, Nov 20: The Academic Council of the University of Jammu, chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof Umesh Rai, approved several initiatives to enhance the academic structure and align it with emerging educational trends. The meeting highlighted the importance of skill-based education, revising course structures to improve employability, and integrating interdisciplinary and practical learning approaches.
The Council endorsed the introduction of Four-Year Undergraduate Programs (FYUGP) in BCA and BBA, with Data Science as a major subject in BCA at the Kathua Campus under NEP-2020, to commence from the academic session 2025-26. A PhD program in Journalism and Mass Communication was approved for the Department of Journalism and Media Studies. A one-year PG Diploma in Museology and Conservation, under the Centre for Studies in Museology and aligned with the National Higher Education Qualifications Framework (NHEQF), was agreed upon in principle, subject to compliance with UGC norms.
Additionally, the Council approved a one-time special chance for reappear or failure candidates and division improvement in various programs. Two new PG Diploma programs in the Department of Sanskrit, starting in the academic session 2025-26, were also endorsed.
Discussions emphasized the need to adopt student-centric policies, incorporate feedback mechanisms, and encourage experiential learning to address real-world challenges. The VC underscored the University’s recent advancements, including an improved NIRF ranking, the recognition of its Business School among top government institutions, and the signing of MoUs with leading organizations to boost research and infrastructure development.
The Registrar, Dr Neeraj Sharma, presented proposals related to curriculum revisions, new programs, and research-focused policies, all aimed at strengthening the University’s academic framework and ensuring alignment with global standards.
Prof Anju Bhasin, Dean Academic Affairs, Prof Meena Sharma, Dean, Planning & Development, Prof Neelu Rohmetra, Dean Research Studies and all Deans, Rectors, Directors, HoDs, Conveners and college principals were also present in the meeting.
The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Sumita Sharma, Joint Registrar, Academic/Academic Affairs.
