JU awards Medals, Ph D Degrees in 14th Convocation

JAMMU, Sept 1: Jammu University today awarded 131 Medals and Ph D Degrees for the year 2013 as 14th Convocation of JU was held today.
Pranab Mukherjee, President of India, was the chief guest on the occasion while Governor N N Vohra, who is also Chancellor of the University, presided over the Convocation. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Pro-Chancellor of JU and Minister for Higher Education Mohd Akbar Lone were the guests of honour.
A total of 64 candidates were awarded the University Gold Medals, Cash Awards and Medal created out of endowments while 67 candidates, who completed their Ph D during 2013 from the Faculty of Sciences, Life Sciences, Arts, Business Studies, Social Sciences, Mathematical Sciences and Education, were awarded Degree of Doctorate of Philosophy.
The General Zorawar Singh Auditorium, where the Convocation function was held, echoed with thunderous applause when President of India presented seven medals to Aakanksha Mahajan in the faculty of Medical Sciences.
Manvi Verma got Verinder Goel Memorial gold Medal for securing highest marks in Eye & ENT in MBBS Final while Ankit Mahajan was awarded Nikhil Baru Memorial Gold Medal for having MBBS in first attempt with highest marks in Medicine.
Mrs Ishwinder Mahajan Memorial Gold Medal in MBA (Male category) was awarded to Aditya Paul who also got University Gold Medal while Mrs Ishwinder Mahajan Memorial Gold Medal for securing highest marks amongst the female candidates of The Business School, JU, went to Priyanka Kumari.
Sunali Bindra got University Gold Medal in M Com and Dr L C Khullar Memorial Cash Prize while Era Mehta was awarded Gold Medal for having passed B Sc with first class first position and Dr Badri Nath Sharma Memorial Gold Medal for having passed B Sc Final examination with highest marks in Chemistry.
In B Com, Vriti Jain was awarded University Gold Medal and also the Jammu Kashmir Bank Limited Gold Medal while Nitasha Ghai got University Gold Medal in LLB and Justice Bodh Raj Sawhny Memorial Gold Medal as well as Advocate Ram Nath Balgotra Cash Prize. Sahil Randhawa got Lakshmi Shivanath Memorial Gold Medal for securing highest marks in Dogri and English subject taken together in B A Final.
The University Gold Medal in MA Education went to Akta Kumari while the University Gold Medal in M Ed was awarded to Sachin Sharma (Regular) and Payal Sharma (Distance Education).

After the Registrar JU, Manoj Dhar declared the `Convocation Open’ with the permission of the Chancellor and mementos were presented to the guests, the Vice-Chancellor Prof Mohan Pal Singh Ishar presented the University report card.
He informed about the academic and Research output of the university besides other academic events, held recently by JU. In this context, he particularly mentioned about the 101st Indian Science Congress, hosted by JU in February last and informed that over one hundred international and national academic events were organized by various Departments and Campuses of JU.
Highlighting the quality initiatives taken by the university, the VC also threw light on collaborations and linkages, infrastructural development, sporting and cultural activities on the campus.
Chief Justice of J&K High Court, Justice M M Kumar, Chief Secretary Iqbal Khandey, Director General of Police, K Rajendra, Divisional Commis-sioner Jammu Shantmanu, and various others top officers from Civil as well as Police besides senior politicians and academicians attended the Convocation function, which lasted for more than one and half hour.
