JU Department of Botany celebrates Himalayan Day

JAMMU, Sept 9: “The Himalayan Day-2017” was observed here today in Department of Botany, University of Jammu.
During the Himalayan Day celebration, an extempore sketch competition on “Contribution of Himalaya & our Liabilities” was organized in the Botanical Garden of the University which was followed by a popular lecture by Prof R K Ganjoo, an eminent professor of Quaternary Geology and Director, Institute of Glaciology, PG Department of Geology, JU.
Prof Ganjoo spoke on “Mighty Himalaya: The Game Changer”. During his interaction with the students, scholars and faculty, he exhorted upon the younger generation to revisit the subject carefully because the origin of Himalaya is very complicated and its sustenance is required for the life of whole of the Indian sub-continent. Further, he deliberated upon the role of Himalaya in species endemism and species migration, particularly from Eurasian plate. He put his emphasis on the availability of water, pure air and soil in India because of the presence of great Himalaya as a boundary to the country in north.
Prof Namrata Sharma, in-charge Head of the Department, Dr Veenu Kaul, Dr Sikander Pal, Dr Geeta and Dr Harish Chander Dutt were also present in the programme.
