JAMMU, June 4: The Law School, University of Jammu, organised an insightful interaction and lecture on the topic “Human Rights Jurisprudence and Domestic Violence Laws” for senior semester students under the guidance of Prof Manju Jamwal, Director, The Law School.
The session was led by Advocate Uma Kapahi, Panel Lawyer, DLSA, Jammu, and provided a comprehensive overview of the Domestic Violence Act, 2005. She elucidated the salient provisions of the Act, highlighting the various forms of abuse it addresses and the legal remedies available to victims.
Advocate Kapahi also highlighted the availability of free legal aid for victims of domestic violence, emphasizing that the right to legal aid has brought significant relief to millions of women suffering violence in their households.
Earlier in the session, Dr Monica Narang provided an insightful understanding of how human rights principles inform and shape legal frameworks concerning domestic violence. Her presentation laid the groundwork for the discussion, emphasising the role of human rights in developing comprehensive legal protections for victims.
Concluding the interaction, Dr Nitan Sharma hailed the District Legal Services Authority Jammu’s initiative in sensitising students and relevant stakeholders about contemporary socio-legal issues. He particularly focused on the crucial intersection of gender jurisprudence and domestic violence laws, stressing the importance of legal awareness and education in addressing these pressing issues.
The event was highly informative and successful in enhancing students’ understanding of the legal measures and support systems available to combat domestic violence.
