JU Law School organizes workshop on Mahatma Gandhi

JAMMU, Sept 26: The Law School Literary Society University of Jammu, in collaboration with Gandhi Peace Foundation Jammu Chapter, organised one day workshop on Mahatma Gandhi .
The theme of the workshop was ” Mahatma Gandhi and the Present Era “. The inaugural lecture was delivered by Prof John M S from the Department of International Relations & Politics & Coordinator, Centre for Gandhian Studies, Central University of Kerala . He is also editor of Gandhi Marg – an internationally renowned journal.
The theme of the lecture was “Mahatma Gandhi and contemporary challenges”. He provided the students a historical perspective of how handling conflicts with violence and force has created negative peace in the societies. He highlighted the role of non-violent peaceful methods which aim at the eradication of the root of the problems thus leading to sustainable societies. He also touched upon the environmental aspect of Mahatma Gandhi and made a reference to different movements like Chipko movement, Appiko Movement , Silent Movement, Narmada Bachao Angolan, etc.
Earlier Dr Seema Rohmetra , Assistant Professor and Coordinator, Gandhi Peace Foundation Jammu chapter, presented the welcome address wherein she introduced the guest speaker to the students and thereafter talked on the relevance of Gandhian values in general and his notion of political obligation in particular .
The workshop was based on the methodology of having group discussions with a purpose to sensitise the students about the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi towards building peaceful sustainable societies in India and across. Two groups were formed for the purpose.
Group I comprised of the students mainly Iran Irtiza, Muskaan Puri, Muskaan Sharma and Mansimran. The speakers deliberated and discussed upon the Gandhian era in the pre British period and the manner in which Mahatma Gandhi led different movements and changed the character of freedom movement making it people’s movement , thus mobilising different sections of the society towards a common goal.
The other group comprised of the students namely Bhavesh Bhushan, Ratul Dhiman, Akash Deep, Junaid Yasin Malik , Ashutosh Sharma and Haroon Abaas, who dealt with different aspects of Gandhi and focused upon his relevance in the contemporary era.
The workshop concluded with two power point presentations; one on the Life and works of Mahatma Gandhi and the other showing favourite Bhajan of Gandhi “Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye…” being sung by artists of 150 countries.
