JU organises web talk on ‘Women and COVID-19’

JAMMU, May 22: Continuing the web talk series, University of Jammu today organised the 3rd web talk on ‘Women and COVID 19’, which was delivered by Prof Vishav Raksha, Director Centre for Women Studies and Professor Department of Sociology.
Prof Manoj Dhar, Vice Chancellor JU, in his opening remarks, said that it was a very positive use of the time in hand wherein university faculty is coming forward and sharing their expertise in different fields with the scholars across India and other countries as well.
Prof Vishav Raksha, in her talk, deliberated in detail how the pandemic crisis is affecting men and women differently. Quoting in detail the UN Policy brief on impact of COVID-19 on women, she elaborated the four dimensions in which the women have been severely hit by the pandemic crisis.
Listing the first dimension, she explained the economic impact on the women who do paid work in both formal and informal sectors. She elaborated how the lockdown arising out of COVID crisis is taking away their jobs and how they were experiencing the challenge of working amidst these times, especially the healthcare workers including nurses and doctors.
“The second dimension is the impact on their health, wherein the attention on the crisis has taken away the other required health resources and support systems for women resulting in increased health issues among them. The third is the burden of unpaid care work the women have to bear in this crisis as all other service providers including domestic workers are also stranded and all members of the family including men and children besides the old and infirm are at home,” she said and listed the fourth one as the most important dimension, which is of gender related violence that women face during these times.
Prof Vishav Raksha also spoke about the digital world becoming the real world now and how women and especially mothers are facing the challenge of online teaching and online learning.
The talk was followed by a question answer session. It was moderated by Dr Vinay Thusoo.
