JAMMU, Sept 30: The Department of History, University of Jammu, organized the third lecture “Remembering Jallianwala Bagh”, under the banner of “Major Debates in Indian History”, an initiative taken by the Department of History.
The speaker on the occasion was Prof K L Tuteja, a Professor of the Kurukshetra University, an eminent historian of the national movement and an authority on the modern history of Punjab, who spoke on the event in the context of evolving colonial system of governance and suppression of mass movement in Punjab during 1919.
He emphasized on how the Punjab of those times was strategically important for the British and how it could serve their imperial interests. Their policy therefore, was paternalistic in nature and revolved around the principal of authoritarian administration. The speaker further remodeled the role of M K Gandhi in this entire event and highlighted how he was considered to be a messiah by the masses. He presented a new approach of understanding the Jallianwala Bagh tragedy from the perspective of the people of Punjab. He also highlighted how this event marked the start of new mass movement in India.
Prof Jasbir Singh delivered the presidential remarks. Earlier, the function began with a welcome note by Prof Shyam Narayan Lal who also introduced the speaker and the theme of the lecture. The event was concluded by Prof Suman Jamwal who presented a vote of thanks.
