JAMMU, Jan 23: NSS Unit of Social Sciences and Languages in JU bagged the 15th Prof B D Sharma Running Trophy while the first, second and third prizes in the debate contest were won by Zain-ul-Abdeen Banday of the Department of Political Science in JU, Ekta Choudhary of JK College of Education and Sahil Mehta of the Department of Economics in JU.
Harneet Singh from Directorate of Distance Education and Sapna from JK College of Education got the encouragement prizes.
In all 17 teams comprising of 34 participants took part in Prof B D Sharma Memorial Inter-Collegiate/Inter-Departmental Debate on the topic “In the opinion of the house -the Economic Interlinking of SAARC countries can bring peace in the South Asian Region” at University of Jammu.
This event is organized every year by the Office of the Programme Coordinator, NSS, and University of Jammu in the memory of Prof B D Sharma, a renowned economist of the State.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof R D Sharma, JU Vice Chancellor, said that the topic of the debate competition is very relevant. He said that the economy is very important and the policy making decisions evolve round the economy of the country. He said that the economic dynamics are going to define the relations between the countries as the cold war era is a past now.
Earlier, Prof Jasbir Singh, Chairman, NSS Campus units, introduced the theme of the debate. He also highlighted the academic and research achievements of Prof B D Sharma.
Dr Anju Thappa introduced the judges, who included Jagdish Chander, Dr Aruna Sharma and Prof Monika Sethi.
Vote of thanks was presented by Dr Hema Gandotra.
Prof Pankaj Srivastava, DSW, Prof Parmeshwari Sharma, Chairperson Campus Cultural committee, Dr Aroon Sharma (son of Prof B D Sharma), Prof Neeru Sharma, Dr Sanjay Sharma , Dr Virender Koundal, Dr Prakash Chand and Dr Neharica Subhash also graced the occasion.
