JAMMU, June 13: The Jammu University Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe Employees Association has strongly condemned the statement of Vice-Chancellor, Sri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) in which he stated that reservation inculcates lethargic attitude among the students which leads to incompetence.
A meeting of the Association was held wherein its president R L Kaith said that a person sitting on a high position should not make such a statement which is against the spirit of the Constitution of India which provides equal opportunities to the citizens of India under its Article 15 Clause 4 and Article 16 Clause 4.
“If the Constitution does not provide this kind of support, the people from oppressed sections would not be able to avail equal opportunities”, he said adding that reservation is the only hope for the communities oppressed for so long.
The members also hailed the decision of the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to enhance the retirement age of State Government employees from 58 to 60 years as also the upper age limit for youths to obtain Government. jobs from 37 to 40 for general category and 40 to 43 for reserved category.
