JAMMU, Apr 24: Department of Sociology, Ramnagar Campus, University of Jammu today organized one day seminar on the topic “Women Empowerment in India: Challenges and Social Constraints”.
RS Pathania, MLA Ramnagar, was the Chief-Guest on the occasion. Prof Rajni Dhingra, Head, Department of Home Science and Dean, Faculty of Sciences, University of Jammu and Prof Abha Chauhan, Head, Department of Sociology, University of Jammu were the main speakers who enlightened the students.
Prof Rajni Kant, Director, Ramnagar Campus and Chief-Coordinator Off-site Campuses, University of Jammu in his welcome address highlighted that the women in India are excelling in the different fields of society. He stressed that the significant role of women cannot be denied in society which constitute 50% of the society.
Professor Rajni Kant brought it to the notice of Local MLA about the paucity of funds which are hampering the ongoing construction activity of Ramnagar Campus at Dalsar. He also requested the MLA to take up the issue pertaining to funding of the Campuses to the relevant quarters in the assembly so that the ongoing activity is not hampered and the off-site campuses start functioning at the earliest possible.
Speaking on the topic, Prof Rajni Dhingra argued that gender discrimination exists in Indian society because of gender role socialization. “This process of gendering assigns different roles to men and women in society. As a result male roles are given importance and female roles are under-valued by the patriarchial Indian society”, she added.
Prof Abha Chauhan highlighted that there are stereotypes and orthodox mind set existing in society which discriminate women. She argued that the patriarchial structure of society is responsible for female subordination.
The MLA Ramnagar in his address stressed on the economic, social and political empowerment of women in India and especially the rural women. He encouraged the women to have access of the different schemes and policy of women empowerment.
