JAMMU, Feb 10: Justice Bawa Singh Walia, Additional Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, will take oath as Additional Judge of J&K High Court on February 12.
With the oath of Justice Bawa Singh Walia as Judge of J&K High Court, the strength of Judges of the State High Court will increase to 10 including Chief Justice.
Out of these 10 Judges, 8 are permanent Judges including Chief Justice whereas two will be as Additional Judges of High Court. The sanctioned strength of the State High Court is 17 and seven posts are still vacant.
Born on August 28, 1961 in Jalandhar, Punjab, Justice Walia did ICSE from St. John’s High School, Chandigarh in 1978, Bachelor of Arts from D.A.V. College, Chandigarh in 1982, LL.B. from the Punjab University in 1985 besides he stood 1st Class 1st in Bachelor of Law in 1984 for which he was awarded Rai Bahadur Badri Dass Medal as well as Vice – Chancellor’s Merit Scholarship.
He taught law at the Department of Law, Punjab University, Chandigarh as a visiting part-time faculty from 1990 to 1996 and was enrolled as a member of the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana in 1985. He practised in divergent fields of law and remained Legal Advisor to the Punjab State Industrial Development Corporation Limited and Electronic Systems Punjab Limited, Punjab Information and Communication Technology Corporation Ltd.
He remained Additional Advocate General, Punjab with effect from November 1, 2012, till elevation as Additional Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on September 25, 2014. He was recently transferred to J&K High Court.
