JAMMU, Apr 11: The Jyanti of Mahatma Jyoti Rao was celebrated here today by Shri Guru Ravi Dass Sabha Bahu Fort at Gurdwara Shri Guru Ravi Dass Bahu Fort.
Rich tributes were paid to Mahatma Jyoti Rao Phule by the prominent persons of Bahu Fort. Speaking on this occasion Sham Lal Basson, general secretary Shri Guru Ravi Dass Sabha Bahu Fort said that Phule worked throughout his life for the up-liftment of downtrodden people, farmers, labourers and women.
He said that Phule stressed upon education to eradicate social evils and superstitions.
“Phule also started India’s first girl primary school at Bidhewada, Pune on January 1, 1848 with the help of his wife Krantijyoti Savitri Bai Phule,” he maintained adding: “Mata Savitri Bai Phule bravely faced atrocities from the orthodox class for her social services and the Phule couple was thrown out from their home for educating girls.”
Bassoon said that all this failed to discourage the Phule couple who continued in their move and opened 18 schools from the year 1848-1852.
Those who paid tributes to Phule included Lokinder Singh, Ravi, Mohan Lal, Ashok Kumar, Joginder Kumar, Moti Ram, Charan Dass Shivgotra, Hans Raj, Chanda, Billa and Kamal Kalsotra.
