GANDOH (BHALESA), May 19: National Conference Additional General Secretary Dr Sheikh Mustaffa Kamaal and Provincial President Devender Singh Rana today exhorted party cadres to dedicate one month for service of the earthquake affected people of the Chenab Valley sans politics.
Addressing the affected people at Thathri, Kahra, Bhatyas, Gandoh and other interior areas, Dr Kamaal urged his party workers to fan out to the remote and far flung areas, meet the sufferers and coordinate in the gigantic task of mitigating the sufferings of the people.
Dr Kamaal reiterated his party’s resolve to ensure proper rehabilitation of the earthquake victims, keeping in view the requirements for renovating and constructing dwelling units. He said the Government machinery has already intensified relief measures, which he hoped will get further momentum when the Leh type package is sanctioned for the area.
Stressing the need for expediting the aid efforts, the Additional General Secretary asked the people not to nurture the feeling of isolation as the people of the State share their agonies.
He complimented NC cadres for taking the call when natural calamity struck the region, saying this spirit has been a guiding force for National Conference cadres all along.
Speaking on the occasion, the Provincial President Devender Singh Rana referred to the gravity of the situation caused by nature’s wrath and said, “we want to supplement the efforts in mitigating the sufferings of the victims.”
He lauded the camaraderie exhibited by the National Conference workers and various socio-religious organisations in helping out the affected people during most turbulent times in the wake of earthquake early this month and said this momentum is required to be maintained till the sufferers get settled down and rehabilitated. While the Government is doing its best to meet the challenge, the role of philanthropic agencies, social organisations and political parties cannot be undermined, he added.
Referring to the special package sought by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during his meeting with the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, the Provincial President hoped that this will go a long way in implementing the rehabilitation programme in the affected region.
While relief and rehabilitation measures are afoot, the Provincial President said the damages caused by the tremors call for more than what has been done so far. He pleaded for priority attention towards making adequate shelters for the homeless people, ensuring health and hygiene, supply of basics and above all creating alternative arrangements for continuation of academics.
The Provincial President announced conversion of the district, block and Panchayat Halqa committees of National Conference in the three districts into relief committees to ensure that people are helped in a big way.
District President National Conference Doda, Khalid Najeeb Suharwarthy and District Preisent Kishtwar, Tanveer Kitchloo also addressed the gatherings.
