Kanaklata files nomination for RS bypolls in UP

LUCKNOW, Dec 9:
Samajwadi Party candidate Kanaklata Singh, daughter of former party leader Mohan Singh, today filed her nominations for one of the two seats of the Rajya Sabha going  to bypolls in Uttar Pradesh on December 20.
Ms Kanaklata, accompanied by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav  and several ministers, filed the nominations in two sets before  the returning officer and Principal Secretary(assembly ) Pradeep Kumar Dubey here.
Tomorrow is the last date for filing of nominations for both the seats but the ruling SP is yet to announce the name of their candidate for the second seat.
Both the RS seats is likely to be annexed by the ruling Samajwadi Party as they have majority in the UP assembly.
Returning officer and Principal Secretary of Uttar Pradesh assembly Pradeep Kumar Dubey said here that the by-election was necessitated due to the death of SP member Mohan Singh on September 22 last and the term of the seat will expire on July 4,2016.
The second seat where by-election would be held was vacated due to disqualification of Congress member Rashid Masood on September 19, after he was convicted in a crime. The term of the seat expires on April 2,2018.
The last date for nominations is December 10. Scrutiny of the papers would be done on December 11 and candidates can withdraw their nominations till December 13.
If necessary, polling would be held on December 20 from 0900 hrs to 1600 hrs and the result would be declared thereafter.
However, it is certain that only SP will give its candidates for the by-elections and they will be elected unopposed on December 13 after the expiry of the last date of withdrawal. (UNI)
