SRINAGAR, Feb 10: Residents of Malik Mohalla village in the Wusun area of Kangan in Ganderbal district expressed frustration today over the misuse of water supply pipes intended for a vital scheme.
The locals cited a lack of oversight by the Jal Shakti Department as the root cause of the issue. They said these pipes were designated for a water supply scheme in Lar Preng area of Ganderbal’s Kangan tehsil. However, the project has been stagnant for the past 5 years, leading to the neglect of these pipes by the Jal Shakti Department.
“They have been lying idle here for the last 5 years, some repurposed as makeshift bridges, while others lie abandoned in streams. We have never witnessed any departmental activity in this regard,” Mohammad Zaman, a local, said.
Zahoor Ahmad Malik, another resident, echoed similar sentiments. “The pipes have become makeshift bridges, scattered haphazardly. They were intended for a project that never materialized. Some individuals have even appropriated these pipes for personal use in their fields. It is a blatant misuse of State funds,” he said. He said these pipes were procured using public funds, and now they’re being misused.
The locals urged the LG administration to intervene promptly and establish an independent team to investigate the matter thoroughly. “An independent investigation is necessary to identify those responsible for this gross mismanagement. Our community deserves better, and we hope that our concerns are heard and addressed without further delay,” they said.
