JAMMU, Apr 18: Five candidates joined the electoral fray for Ladakh Parliamentary seat on last day of filing of nomination papers including Congress former MLA from Kargil, Haji Asgar Ali Karbalaie, who will contest as an Independent candidate against party’s official nominee Rigzin Spalbar.
Scrutiny of nominations will be held on April 20 while candidates can withdraw their nomination papers till April 22. Polling will be held on May 6.
Apart from Karbalaie, four other candidates, who filed their nomination papers today, included Sajjad Hussain Kargili, Tsering Namgayal, Kacho Mohammad Feroz and Asgar Ali.
BJP candidate Jamyang Tsering Namgayal, Chairman-cum-CEC of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh and Congress candidate Rigzin Spalbar have already foiled their nomination papers.
Sajjad Kargili’s nomination is backed by Islamiya School Kargil (ISK), National Conference and People’s Democratic Party while Asgar Ali Karbalaie’s candidature is supported by Imam Khomeini Memorial Trust (IKMT).
Meanwhile, people in Kargil today held massive protest demonstrations and blocked road demanding that only one consensus candidate of all parties should be fielded from Kargil to avoid split of votes.
The protesters shouted slogans against some of the candidates.
They said the unity displayed by the people of Kargil during agitation to secure rotational divisional headquarters for Kargil, should be maintained.
