Excelsior Correspondent UDHAMPUR, Nov 24: The sixty fourth anniversary of the Liberation of Kargil by the Indian Army was celebrated at Kargil today. “Kargil Yome Fateh” is also known as “Kargil Victory Day”. With utter disregard to the civilian life or collateral damage, Pakistani raiders pounded the town and captured Kargil on May 10, 1948 taking advantage of thin deployment of Indian Army. In reply, advancing from the West, the Gallant troops of 1/5 Royal Gorkha Rifles, part of 77 Para Brigade reached within 6 Km of Kargil, only to be held by an enemy position across the Shingo river at Kharal Bridge (Now Harka Bahadur Bridge). The brave and determined Gorkhas led by Capt A K Kochar, Company Commander and Subedar Harka Bahadur, a platoon Commander swam across the icy cold waters of Shingo river and forced the enemy to withdraw towards Marol in North (Presently across LoC). The Gorkhas entered the Kargil town at 0400 hrs on Nov 23, 1948 and Kargil was secured. Today, Kargil is flourishing due to sheer hard work of simple and gentle people of Kargil along with active support of civil administration and Indian Army. Conceptualized by the GOC 8 Mountain Division “Kargil Yome Fateh” was celebrated marking the characteristic bonhomie and brotherhood as seen in this region with equal participation from people in uniform and civilians.The event started with the senior Army officers and civil dignitaries laying wreath at the Kargil war memorial to pay homage to the martyrs. It was followed by felicitation of ex-servicemen and address to the troops and ex-servicemen by senior Army Officers.
