KARGIL, Mar 22: Thousands of mourners in Kargil gathered to mark the 1400th martyrdom anniversary of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, the first Shia Imam, on the 21st day of Ramadan.
The commemoration, organized by the Jamiat Ul Ulama Isna Asharia Kargil (JUIAK), was held with deep sorrow and reverence for the martyrdom of Imam Ali.
The procession began after mid-day prayers from the Isna Asharia Campus Kargil and passed through key locations in the town, including Main Bazaar, Isna Asharia Chowk, and Khomeni Chowk.
It was joined by participants from surrounding areas such as Pashkum, Poyen, Baroo, and Minjee, with march culminating at Inqilab Manzil.
Mourners, dressed in black, paid tribute to Imam Ali by beating their chests and reciting elegies.
One of the mourners said that Imam Ali, who was struck by a poisoned sword while praying in the Grand Mosque of Kufa in 661 AD, is a symbol of justice and sacrifice in the Islamic history.
“His martyrdom occurred during the sacred night of Laylat al-Qadr, which holds great significance in the Islamic faith,” he said.
The event’s main sermon was delivered by Sheikh Nazir Mehdi Mohammadi, President of JUIAK.
He spoke about Imam Ali’s legacy of justice, courage, and leadership, urging those in power to follow his principles of equality and service.
Sheikh Nazir also condemned recent terrorist attacks on minorities in Syria and the ongoing human rights violations against Shia Muslims in Parachinar, Pakistan.
A special night of prayers and Qur’an recitation was held at Isna Asharia Campus, where community members gathered for vigils, supplications, and religious discourses on Imam Ali’s contributions to Islam.
The event concluded with a collective prayer for global peace, justice, and the protection of the oppressed.
