Karra concerned over delay in restoration of democratic setup

SRINAGAR, July 5: Senior Congress leader Tariq Hameed Karra has expressed deep concern over the prolonged delay in restoring the democratic governance in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), while accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of intentionally “demeaning and disempowering” the people.
He alleged that the BJP wants to rule J&K directly from the Centre, making the residents unheard and unrepresented. Karra made these remarks during a party workers’ meeting in Srinagar.
He criticized the Centre for adopting what he called as negative and anti-people measures in J&K, leading to disappointment among the people. He claimed that the BJP is avoiding elections in fear of a humiliating defeat due to its unpopular policies and vindictive approach towards the region.
The absence of an elected Government in the state-turned-union territory for the past five years has bred uncertainty, deprivation, and hopelessness, Karra added.
Furthermore, the Congress leader commented on the BJP’s push for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), describing it as a desperate attempt to divert attention from pressing issues such as rising fuel prices, unemployment, farmer distress, inflation, and excessive taxes.
He alleged that the BJP’s focus on UCC is aimed at polarizing the electorate and winning another term in office rather than addressing the real concerns of the common people.
Karra called upon the people to stay vigilant and thwart the BJP’s divisive agenda. He urged them not to allow the BJP to exploit religious divisions and gain electoral advantages through measures like the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and UCC.
Congress leader Nissar Ahmad Mundoo and others also addressed the gathering.
