Kartarpur corridor: high-level meeting held in MHA

NEW DELHI:A high-level meeting to fast-track the implementation of Kartarpur corridor project was held in the Home Ministry on Tuesday.

The meeting was chaired by the Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba and attended by the Punjab Chief Secretary Karan Avtar Singh, DG BSF R K Misra, Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad Ajay Bisaria and senior officers of other agencies.

The meeting primarily discussed land acquisition for the highway and for the Integrated Check Post (ICP) and was also informed that the preliminary notification for land acquisition for highway has already been issued, a senior Government functionary said.

“Land acquisition work is in progress. This involves four stages, we are in the second stage as of now. We are hopeful that in a month and half we will complete this process” he added.

The notification to acquire land for ICP will be issued on Wednesday. The Punjab Government has assured that the land will be made available for both the projects by mid-March.

The possession of the land to commence preliminary work will be made available to National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI) soon, a senior official privy to this development said.

A detailed plan of ICP is expected to be finalised within the next few days, he further said.

The meeting was also informed that coordinates of zero point have been communicated to Pakistan.

The Kartarpur corridor involves a road link for Sikh pilgrims to visit the famous Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara in Pakistan, which is around three-four km from the International Border.

At a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 22, the corridor from Dera Baba Nanak to the Pakistan border was approved.

Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu on November 26, had laid the foundation stone for construction of Dera Baba Nanak – Kartapur Sahib corridor on the Indian side that will provide a passage to Sikh pilgrims to visit the holy site of Gurudwara Darbar Sahib at Kartarpur in Pakistan.
