Karvan-e-Aman bus to PoK cancelled due to PM visit, polls

SRINAGAR:  The Karvan-e-Aman bus, operating between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad, capital of Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) has been cancelled today in view of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Srinagar visit today and polling in 16 assembly segments in the Kashmir valley tomorrow.    The weekly bus run has been cancelled for security reasons, official sources told UNI here.

Authorities on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) have agreed to cancel the service, they said, adding that bus service will resume next week as per schedule.    The bus run was also cancelled last month on November 3 on account of Muharram.

The service, started on April 7,2005 after India and Pakistan agreed to allow travel of state subjects living on both sides of the LoC on permits instead of permits, has helped thousands of families, divided in 1947 to meet each other.    The first bus was flagged off by then Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh despite opposition by separatists and militant outfits, who carried out a fidayeen attack hours before the bus left for POK.
