Kashmir gets relief from fog, bad weather hits train services in Jammu

*Two Indigo flights cancelled, 13 operate

JAMMU/ SRINAGAR, Dec 30; While after five days of fog disrupting life in parts of Kashmir, there was relief from it today, but foggy weather continued to hit train, air and vehicular traffic in Jammu and parts of northern region.
Cold wave continued to grip many parts of Jammu region while plain areas witnessed dense fog during morning hours. A few flights arrived little late due to poor weather conditions but out of the 15 scheduled flights, 13 were operated twoday while two flights ( Indigo) were cancelled due to bad weather conditions.
Almost all the trains arrived late Jammu station today by 2 to 13 hours today. With this the departure time of some of the trains was also rescheduled. Rush of passengers continued to witness at the Jammu station due to this disruption.
A Northern Railway spokesman said that Anarnath Express train arrived late by 13 hours at Jammu station today, Puja Express was late by 9 hours, Nanded Express 8 hours, Jhelum and Malwa Express 7 hours; Superfast, Tata Muri, Madras Exp and Shalimar Exp late by 6 hours; Utter Sampark Kranti, Somnath Express, Jammu Mail, Duronto and Sealdah by 3 hours while Shri Shakti Exp, Hemkund, Begumpura Exp, Rajdhani and Vande Bharat were late by two hours today.
Kashmir remained engulfed in dense fog for the last five days disrupting normal life in the Valley but there was no fog today much to the relief of the people. However, the temperatures across the region settled below freezing point.
Srinagar recorded a low of minus 2.8°C against minus 3.3°C on the previous night and it was 0.7°C below normal for this time of the year.
Qazigund recorded a minimum of minus 2.0°C against minus 4.2°C on the previous night. The minimum temperature was 0.3°C above normal for the town.
Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 4.1°C against minus 5.4°C on the previous night and it was 1.1°C above normal for the resort. Kokernag recorded a minimum of minus 1.3°C against minus 2.6°C on the previous night and the temperature was above normal by 1.4°C for the place.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 2.5°C, same as on the previous night and the temperature was 3.7°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort. Kupwara recorded a low of minus 2.3°C against minus 4.0°C on the previous night and it was 0.2°C above normal there.
The maximum temperatures at Srinagar, Qazigund, Pahalgam, Kupwara, Kokernag and Gulmarg settled at 8.0°C, 9.8°C, 7.7°C, 7.3°C, 8.7°C and 7.0°C respectively.
Kashmir valley is under ‘Chillai-Kalan’, the 40-day harsh period of winter, which will end on January 30. However it does not mean an end to the winter. It is followed by a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ that occurs between January 30 and February 19 and a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 1.
Weatherman has predicted generally cloudy but dry weather in the next few days.
However, he said, there is a possibility of light snow over higher reaches during the evening/night of December 31.
He said from January 1-2, the weather is expected to be dry.” Generally cloudy weather with light rain/snow is expected at “isolated” places on January 3-4.
