SRINAGAR: Only one-way traffic has been allowed on Friday on the national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country while historic Mughal road and Srinagar-Leh national highway remained closed.
However, road from Bandipora to border town of Gurez was through for one-way, probably for the first time during the month of January, when Kashmir is facing 40-day-long coldest period of the winter “Chilai-e-Kalan”, which commenced from December 21st last year.
We have allowed only one-way traffic on 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu on Friday to avoid accident and traffic jam, a traffic police official said.
He said there was apprehension of fresh landslides because of rain in Ramban to Ramsu area. Therefore, he said, it was decided that only one-way traffic will be allowed on the highway today.
We were allowing light vehicles from both sides and heavy vehicles from one side only.
Today light and heavy vehicles will ply from Jammu to Srinagar only and no vehicle, including security force convoy, will be allowed from opposite direction, he said.
However, light vehicles will have to cross Nagrota between 0600 hrs to 1000 hrs and at Udhampure by 1100 hrs. Heavy vehicles will have to cross Udhampur from 0500 hrs to 1000 hrs.
He said two way light vehicles will be allowed from both sides only after receiving green signal from the traffic police officials and Border Roads Organisation (BRO).
The historic 86-km-long Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region remained closed despite clearance of snow at most of the places. However, traffic could not be restored as the road is very slippery and accumulation snow at some places.
The national highway, linking Ladakh region with Kashmir remained shut due to accumulation and slippery road conditions, particularly at Zojila pass, where centre has cleared construction of a tunnel to make it all weather road. (AGENCIES)
