Kashmir hills receive snowfall

Srinagar, Jan 28: The hills of Kashmir received snowfall today while parts of the Valley were lashed by rains leading to rise in night temperatures while the day temperatures dropped by several notches.
The higher reaches of Kashmir received snowfall since last night with Gulmarg and Macchil received around 5 inches of snow, Gurez 3 inches, upper reaches of Baramulla around 3 inches, Sonmarg 3 inches and Pir Ki Gali 4 inches.
Tourists at Gulmarg were seen playing with snow as this was season’s first snowfall in the ski resort.
The parts of Kashmir had light rains and with Meteorological Department Srinagar forecasting light to moderate rain and snowfall over Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours.
“Currently, the weather is generally cloudy with light rain and snow at a few places, including the ski resort of Gulmarg, with a significant improvement in the minimum temperature at many stations across the Kashmir valley,” he said. Click here to watch video
The MeT office said there is a possibility of light to moderate rain or snow at many places in J&K with heavy snowfall over isolated higher reaches of Kashmir Division, including Kupwara, Baramulla, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Shopian, Anantnag and Kulgam districts, from Sunday afternoon to January 29 late afternoon.
It said from January 30-31, there is a possibility of light to moderate rain or snow at many places in J&K, with chances of heavy snowfall over a few higher reaches, while the weather will remain generally cloudy with light rain or snow at many places towards late afternoon or evening on February 1-2.
From February 3 to 4, light to moderate rain or snow can occur at many places in J&K.
It has also issued an advisory that the weather system may lead to the temporary closure of roads in higher reaches and important passes, including Sinthan Pass, Mughal Road, Sadhna and Razdan Pass, Zojila, etc., particularly from January 28 to 31. “Travellers are advised to plan their trip accordingly,” the MeT office warned.
With cloud cover over the region, the night temperatures increased across Kashmir as Srinagar recorded the warmest night of the Chillai-Kalan as it recorded a low of 3.3°C against minus 2.3° the previous night and it was 4.3°C above normal for the city for this time of the year.
Qazigund recorded a minimum of minus 0.6 °C which was 2.0 °C above normal for the town.
Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 0.8 °C and it was 5.3 °C above normal for the resort.
Kokernag, recorded a minimum of minus 0.1°C and the temperature was above normal by 2.5°C for the place.
Kupwara recorded a low of 2.1°C and it was 4.6°C above normal there.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 3.5°C and the temperature was 4.0°C above normal for the skiing resort.
With the wet weather, the day temperatures dropped several notches across Kashmir but stayed above normal for this time of the year.
Srinagar recorded a maximum of 8.9 degree Celsius temperature today which was 1.4 degree Celsius above normal for the city for this time of the year and down by 4.4 notches from yesterday.
Qazigund recorded a maximum of 9.2 degree Celsius which is 2.0 degree Celsius above normal for the place during this time of the year and down by 3.0 notches from yesterday.
Pahalgam recorded a maximum of 8.2 degree Celsius which is 3.3 degree Celsius above normal for the place during this time of the year and down by 1.5 notches from yesterday.
Kupwara recorded a maximum of 5.1 degree Celsius which is 2.3 degree Celsius below normal for the place during this time of the year and down by 8.4 notches from yesterday.
Kokernag recorded a maximum of 8.8 degree Celsius which is 2.9 degree Celsius above normal for the place during this time of the year and down by 1.6 notches from yesterday.
Gulmarg recorded a maximum of 0.5 degree Celsius which is normal for the place during this time of the year and down by 2.3 notches from yesterday.
