Kashmir remains cut off from country for 2nd day

SRINAGAR :  The Kashmir valley remained cut off from the rest of the country for the second consecutive day today as the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was closed due to landslides, triggered by rain and snowfall.
The National Highway connecting the Ladakh region with the Kashmir valley and Mughal road, liking south Kashmir with Jammu region also remained closed since December last year.    Dozens of villages, including those near the Line of Control (LoC) also remained cut off from their respective district headquarters due to snow.
Heavy rain triggered landslides at several places, including Penthal, a traffic police official told UNI, adding that no vehicle was allowed from Srinagar or Jammu today.    At Magarkote Ramban on the highway, 70 feet road strip has been washed away.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, has pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to put through the lifeline of Kashmir.
Efforts are being made to repair the washed away road, official sources said.
Official sources said a large number of vehicles, including those carrying passengers and trucks loaded with essential commodities, are stranded at different places on the other side of the Jawahar tunnel.
Similarly, 2,000 vehicles are stranded in the Kashmir valley, they said.
