Srinagar, Mar 19: The University of Kashmir has approved the establishment of a Nursing College at the Kupwara Campus, Chief Minister’s Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani announced today.
“Great News for Kupwara! I am delighted to share that the Nursing College has been officially approved for the Kupwara University Campus,” he wrote in a post on ‘X’.
He also attached a letter he had previously written to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kashmir, apprising her of the challenges faced by students and the growing demand from locals.
He also extended his heartfelt gratitude to Prof. Neelofar Khan, Vice Chancellor of KU, and Prof. Peerzada Sharifdin, Dean of Academic Affairs, for considering his request.
In the letter, he noted that the Civil Society Forum had highlighted the need for paramedical and nursing education in Kupwara district, emphasizing the necessity of developing educational infrastructure in this far-flung region.
“In this regard, creating a paramedical/nursing college will be a significant contribution to this district,” he stated.
He had urged the Vice Chancellor to consider establishing a Nursing/Paramedical College in Kupwara so that aspiring students, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds who cannot afford to pursue such courses outside the district, could access them at their doorstep.
Meanwhile, the J&K Students Association (JKSA) also expressed gratitude for establishing a Nursing College at the satellite campus of the University of Kashmir in Wayen, Kupwara.
The National Convenor of the Association, Nasir Khuehami, said that the landmark approval marks a transformative step toward addressing healthcare disparities in the region while empowering local youth, particularly women, through enhanced educational and professional opportunities.
He further stated, “The establishment of this Nursing College will not only bridge healthcare gaps in Kupwara but also open new avenues for aspiring students, fostering socio-economic progress in this underserved region.”
Kupwara, long hindered by limited access to specialized education and healthcare, is poised for a major boost with this initiative.
