* 11 trains, 7 flights delayed due to fog

SRINAGAR/ JAMMU, Jan 9: While dense fog continued to affected air and train traffic in Jammu, the days in the coldest part of the winter in Kashmir, `Chille Kalan’, are warmer with temperatures today souring 7-8 degree Celsius above normal across the region, while as Jammu still remained colder.
Srinagar recorded a maximum of 14.2 degree Celsius which is 8.1 degree Celsius above normal for the place during this time of the year.
Qazigund recorded a maximum of 14.2 degree Celsius which is 8.2 degree Celsius above normal for the place during this time of the year.
Pahalgam recorded a maximum of 10.3 degree Celsius which is 6.4 degree Celsius above normal for the place during this time of the year. Kupwara recorded a maximum of 12.8 degree Celsius which is 6.7 degree Celsius above normal for the place during this time of the year.
Kokernag recorded a maximum of 12.2 degree Celsius which is 7.8 degree Celsius above normal for the place during this time of the year.
Gulmarg recorded a maximum of 6.7 degree Celsius which is 6.2 degree Celsius above normal for the place during this time of the year.
However, the sub-zero temperatures continued during the night despite some respite from the bone-chilling cold across the Valley.
Srinagar recorded a night temperature of minus 2.4 degrees Celsius, up from minus 4.3 degrees the previous day. Qazigund recorded a low of minus 2.6 degrees Celsius against minus 4.2 degrees on Sunday. The temperature at Gulmarg was minus 4.6 degrees Celsius on Monday, slightly down from the minimum temperature the previous night.
Pahalgam recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.4 degrees Celsius, up from the previous night’s minus 5.3 degrees. The minimum temperature in Kokernag settled at minus 1.2 degrees Celsius and in Kupwara at minus 4.5 degrees.
Kashmir is currently under the grip of ‘Chilla-i-Kalan’ , the 40-day harshest winter period when a cold wave grips the region and the temperature drops considerably, leading to the freezing of water bodies as well as water supply lines in several parts of the Valley.
The chances of snowfall are the highest during this period and most areas, particularly the higher reaches, receive heavy snowfall.
Meanwhile, Jammu also experienced a slight rise in temperature with sunny day after 11.30 am till 4 pm on Tuesday, but it was colder than Srinagar on Tuesday again.
The winter capital Jammu recorded a day temperature of 11.5 degrees Celsius against Srinagar’s day temperature of 14.2 deg C and minimum temperature of 5.1 degrees on Tuesday.
Katra Mata Vaishnodevi recorded a minimum temperature of 6.0 deg and maximum 17.8 , Bhaderwah minimum 0.6 deg C and maximum 14 deg while Banihal minimum 0.0 deg and maximum 16.4 deg C today.
Director, Airport Authority, Jammu, S K Garg said that due to dense fog during morning hours at least seven flights were delayed at Jammu Airport today. The departure time of several flights had to be rescheduled. He said no flight was cancelled today.
A Northern Railways spokesman said that eleven trains were delayed due to fog in the region today. He said Puja Express arrived 11 hours late at Jammu station, Malwa Express
8 hours late, Madras Express and Kamkhya Exp late by six hours, Shalimar Exp late by five hours, Superfast 3 hours while Hemkund, Utter Sampark Kranti, Sealdah, Jhelum Exp and Tata Muri late by an one today.
