JAMMU, Sept 15: Scores of Kashmiri students studying nursing at Desh Bhagat University (DBU), Punjab were lathi-charged while they were peacefully protesting against the alleged unapproved transfers of almost 70 students to unrecognized colleges by the University.
Alleging that the decision lacks approval from the Indian Nursing Council and Punjab Nursing Registration Council, the Kashmiri students were peacefully protesting as their future has been hanging in the balance but to suppress their voice, the students were lathi-charged, resulting into injuries to a few female students. The protesting students were also confined within the university building to silence their voices against this unjust decision.
Pertinently, DBU has transferred approximately 70 Kashmiri students enrolled in various paramedical courses to Sardar Lal Singh College without their consent or will. This unilateral move by the University has been ongoing since last year when around 500 students from Jammu and Kashmir, pursuing various paramedical courses at DBU, found themselves caught in a situation beyond their control.
Meanwhile, Apni Party president Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari expressed grave concern over assault on Kashmiri students at DBU in Punjab. He urged Lieutenant Governor of J&K Manoj Sinha to take up this matter with the Punjab Government to ensure that students from J&K do not endure any undue hardship while pursuing their education at DBU.
Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Ghulam Ahmad Mir also expressed concern over the assault on female Kashmiri students in DBU. He urged the Punjab Government to take strict action against the management of DBU for intimidating students and emphasized that the safety of J&K students studying in other States be ensured.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Students Association has also written to Union Minister for Health and Medical Education Mansukh Mandaviya and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over the issue and demanded justice for the Kashmiri students of the Faculty of Nursing at DBU.
