KATHUA, May 25: The farmers in Kathua district are facing the acute scarcity of irrigation water for a week now as Kathua canal has turned totally dry after the water was stopped by the Punjab Government near Madhapur bridge.
The matter was taken up with the Superintending Engineer, Punjab Irrigation Department, Jagmohan by Executive Engineer Irrigation Kathua during their meeting at Ranjit Sagar Dam today and despite his assurance that the water will be released in the canal, nothing was done with the result there is a lot of public outcry in the area as farmers don’t get irrigation facilities for the crop.
The Irrigation Division Kathua has over a week back been informed by the Irrigation Department Punjab that the water will be stopped for over a week in the Kathua canal as the Punjab Irrigation Department will undertake desilting of the canal.
However, this was objected by the Irrigation Department of the state which said that in view of agriculture season on peak the farmers of the area would be put to hardships and it will create a law and order problem in the area.
But the Irrigation Department of Punjab paid no heed to the request and it stopped water in the canal resulting in lot of resentment among the farmers of the area.
