Kathua Police seizes 20 quintals of Khair wood logs, arrests one

KATHUA, Nov 8: J&K Police Kathua seized one Tata 407 vehicle laden with “Khair Wood” logs (weighing approx. 20 Quintals) in the jurisdictional area of Police Station (PS) Rajbagh which were allegedly being smuggled from Korepunnu towards NHW area and one person was arrested and the vehicle was seized.
Police said on Thursday an information was received at BPP Korepunnu through reliable sources that one vehicle is indulged in the smuggling/ theft of banned wood (Khair) of forest produce and doing the illegal “trade of smuggling” of Wood (Khair) without any valid document and permission which was loaded in a vehicle (Tata 407) bearing Registration Number PB07Y-1347 and proceeding from Korepunnu towards the NHW side.
Following a tip off about the smuggling of Khair wood, the police team of PS Rajbagh along with IC BPP, Korepunnu under the guidance of SDPO Border and SHO PS Rajbagh laid a naka and intercepted the vehicle bearing Registration Number PB07Y-1347 which was driven by person namely, Deepak Sharma, son of Puran Chand of Mehrajpur who was involved in smuggling of Khair Wood, police said.
Police further said that during checking it was found that the vehicle laden with approximately 20 quintals of Khair wood logs, when asked for any valid permission the accused person could not produce any document related to the sale and purchase of the Khair wood and therefore, the recovered Khair wood logs (weighing approx. 20 quintals) along with the vehicle was seized and one person was arrested on the spot. A case vide FIR No. 227/2024 U/S 303(2) BNS, 26/33 Forest Act was registered at PS Rajbagh and further investigation was taken up, police added.
