Katju’s remarks against Gandhi rocks Lok Sabha

NEW DELHI :  The issue of derogatory remarks against Mahatma Gandhi and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose by former Supreme Court Judge Markandey Katju rocked the Lok Sabha today with the  Members from various Opposition parties urging for a Censure Motion against the judge for his ‘utterances’.    The issue was raised immediatrely after Question Hour by Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav(RJD), who was joined by several Members, including K C Venugopal(Congress), Bhartuhari Mahtab(BJD) and Sultan Ahmed(AITC).     The Members held that the way the the former Judge had spoken, was highly objectionable and hence that should be condemned strongly by this House as was done by the Rajya Sabha yesterday.    Speaking on his rejected Adjournment notice, Mr Ranjan said “The entire world, including dignitaries like Abraham Lincoln to Nelson Mandela, showed full respect to the Mahatma but Justice Katju making utterances, disregarded everyone.”    The RJD Member said, “The other House yesterday has already adopted a resolution to condemn the former Judge, this House should also take a similar step.”
Mr Ahmed favoured the demand saying since Justice Katju also commented against Netaji, hence his name should also be included in the resolution.
Mr Mahtab said the Home Ministry should contemplate on lodging a case against the judge for making a ‘hate speech’.    Minister of State for Parliament Affairs Rajesh Pratap Rudy said, “The Government and this House share the sentiments expressed by the Members and condemn such statements.    “The Government has no problem if the Speaker takes a call for
adoption of such resolution.”
Speaker Sumitra Mahajan then gave her consent, saying a resolution incorporating sentiments of Members would be moved later in the House.
