JAMMU, Oct 31: Senior BJP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister, Kavinder Gupta strongly criticized the National Conference (NC) for boycotting the Foundation Day celebrations of Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory (UT).
Expressing his disapproval, he condemned the NC leadership’s stance as “hypocritical and disrespectful,” pointing out that the party has not only contested elections under the UT framework but also taken oath and continues to enjoy the Constitutional benefits provided under the Union Territory’s governance structure.
In a statement issued here, today, the BJP leader said, “It is shameful that a party claiming to represent the people of Jammu and Kashmir could blatantly disregard the significance of this day. National Conference leaders are selectively embracing the privileges of the UT status, yet when it comes to acknowledging the structural and developmental transformations it has brought, they choose to turn away.”
Highlighting the NC’s participation in the political processes within J&K UT, he emphasized that the party’s actions reveal a “double standard.” He elaborated that while NC leaders have been quick to seize the advantages of elected office and Constitutional privileges under the UT framework, they are unwilling to stand alongside the people to celebrate the foundation of a new era in J&K’s history.
Kavinder further argued that the NC’s decision to boycott is disrespectful not only to the Union Territory but also against the aspirations of the people who have welcomed the promise of peace, progress, and development that the new governance model offers. “It is time the National Conference (NC) leaders introspect their role in building a stronger Jammu and Kashmir. This boycotting is a direct insult to the mandate of the people,” he said.
The former Deputy Chief Minister reiterated the BJP’s commitment to the UT’s welfare and continued progress, affirming that the party stands for unity, peace, and a prosperous future for all citizens. He called upon the people to reject the divisive approach of parties like the National Conference and Congress and to support the vision of a stable, inclusive, and forward-moving Jammu and Kashmir.
