JAMMU, July 19: Speaker Legislative Assembly, Kavinder Gupta today called for encouraging women folk to go for self employment, adding that women- empowerment, can be achieved only through the improvement of their socio-economic condition.
The Speaker was speaking at function after distributing Pehchan Cards among female artisans during a function organized by Aditi Welfare Trust.
Highlighting the need for women empowerment, the Speaker said that providing them opportunity to become self dependent would prove a game changer for the economic growth of the country. He said that various policies and schemes have been launched by both Centre as well as State Government to encourage women self employment.

Pehchan Card scheme was launched as part of the Pehchan’ initiative of Union Textile Ministry to register and provide identity cards to handicraft artisans and link them to a national database. It is a new upgraded ID card for artisans that will be linked with their Aadhar numbers and bank accounts so that they can receive direct cash transfer benefit.
“To expand the reach of such schemes and programmes, mass awareness is must”, he said. He also asked the unemployed youth to reap the benefits from various self employment ventures launched by the Government.
Meanwhile, Speaker kick-started pipeline laying work at Dashmesh Nagar and later listened to the public issues in Digiana area.
He said that the new pipeline will augment water supply to the locality meeting the long pending demand of the residents. He directed the concerned officers for the timely completion of the work so that residents are benefited at the earliest.
The Speaker also inspected the progress of ongoing work of a park being developed in the locality at an estimated cost of Rs 5 crore. He said that development of parks and green patches in Jammu city and its peripheries forms the part of Government’s earnest efforts to project the winter capital as an independent tourist destination.
He also held a public grievances redressal camp at Digiana and listened to the issues of local people.
Giving a patient hearing to the grievances of the residents of the locality, the Speaker assured them that all their grievances will be looked into for an early redressal.
