JAMMU, Nov 7: Senior BJP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister, Kavinder Gupta has taken a strong stand against the Speaker of Legislative Assembly, accusing him of failing to take action against the manhandling of MLAs in the House. He expressed deep disappointment over the Speaker’s inaction, which he believes compromises the dignity and decorum of the Legislative Body.
He also condemned Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah for his silence on the matter, criticizing his failure to intervene in a time when the sanctity of the Assembly should be paramount.
In his statement, the BJP leader called the incident a “shameful blot on democratic proceedings,” noting that elected representatives were obstructed from voicing the concerns of their constituencies. “The Speaker’s indifference reflects poorly on the Assembly’s commitment to democratic values,” he stated, adding that every representative deserves a safe and respectful space to express the voice of the people.
Further, Kavinder expressed resentment against CM, Omar Abdullah for choosing to remain silent amid such chaos. “The Chief Minister’s failure to step in has emboldened disruptive elements, making it clear that he prioritizes political convenience over democratic principles,” he said.
The senior BJP leader accused the National Conference (NC) of intentionally provoking disruptions under the pretext of defending Article 370, aiming to shift attention away from real issues plaguing the public. He said that the National Conference is using the Article 370 debate to create divisions, thereby diverting focus from pressing issues such as unemployment, infrastructure deficits, and corruption.
“By hiding behind Article 370, the NC seeks to manipulate emotions rather than addressing the genuine grievances of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he asserted.
Kavinder urged the Speaker to uphold the dignity of the Assembly and demanded an impartial inquiry into the incident, ensuring accountability for those who violated the Assembly’s decorum. He also appealed to CM Omar Abdullah to stand above partisan politics and to act responsibly in maintaining the State’s democratic standards.
