JAMMU, Mar 17: The PDP-BJP alliance partners today gave notice for election of BJP MLA from Gandhi Nagar Assembly segment, Kavinder Gupta as new Speaker of the Assembly.
The notice was moved by Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Basharat Ahmad Bukhari (PDP) and endorsed by Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh (BJP), Secretary Assembly Mohammad Ramzan said.
As only one notice was received for the post of Speaker, Kavinder will be elected unanimously to the coveted post and there will be no election for the post. The NC and Congress didn’t field any candidates for post of the Speaker, which will lead to unanimous election of Gupta as the new Assembly Speaker.
NC leaders Mohammad Akbar Lone and Mubarak Gul were the Speakers in the previous NC-Congress coalition Government.
Kavinder will be elected as the Speaker at 10 am tomorrow.
Going by the tradition, the post of Deputy Speaker could go to the main opposition, the National Conference.
The PDP-BJP coalition will take decision on granting status of Leader of Opposition to Omar Abdullah and offering post of Deputy Speaker to the NC in next couple of days, official sources said.
The NC-Congress Government hadn’t given status of the LoP to Mehbooba Mufti though the PDP had 21 MLAs, just two short of required number of 23 to gain the status automatically.
