O P Sharma
This is age of science and technology which hold key to all round development and overall advancement of humanity. Every society has to make concerted endeavours for study and promotion of science and technology in the 21st century.
Professor Rajni Kant, who is presently Vice-Chancellor of Rabindranath Tagore University, Bhopal and was Dean, Research Studies, University of Jammu and taught for over 30 years in the Physic Department. He has a rich experience in his specific subject of research in Solid State in Physics and has guided a quite number of research scholars.
Science of Crystals
The science of crystals, during the past few decades, has progressed very effectively and the literature accrued thereof remains in hard and soft modes of communications. There may be many books in the market or libraries related to the subjects of materials and their scientific and technological applications but the latest book titled as “Applied Solid State Physics”, authored by Professor Rajni Kant, is an exception in itself.
Ever since this book has been released during September,2023 by the Chancellor of University of Jammu, Manoj Sinha and the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Umesh Rai, lot of interest in newer results and research has come to the fore, so far as the fundamental and applied nature of materials is concerned. The book consists of seventeen chapters, with each chapter touching various aspects of crystal’s physics.
The book has been written with an objective of providing clear concepts and understanding of solid state Physics to the under-graduate students of engineering and basic science, undergraduate and post-graduate students of Physics, Chemistry, Biophysics, Geology, Biotechnology, Materials Science, Crystallography, so on. The subject matter presented in this book caters to the basic understanding of under-graduate and post-graduate students who wish to specialize in Material Science (solid state physics, condensed matter physics), a field of trans-disciplinary research.
Simple & Strightforward
The language used in the book is simple, clear and unambiguous. Historical perspective of the topics covered under various chapters has been presented to ensure that the reader finds a linkage between what is known and what essentially is to be known and a comprehensive presentation of the subject matter.
The concepts and processes have been introduced through situations based on pictorial illustrations and mathematical reasoning, with few numerical problems and some thought-provoking questions included at the end of each chapter. A pool of definitions has been provided, for the ease of better understanding of concepts and it have been presented with a focussed perspective so that each reader can find the subject matter easily understandable.
Illustrations
Starting from the concept of a lattice to the understanding of some common crystal structures, a great deal of information about bonding in solids is of great significance in understanding their properties. The core of this book deals with the properties of X-rays, its description, properties and applications.. Disorder in solids, their classification and characterization deal with crystal defects and how the dynamics of solids is affected due to thermal and other types of disorders present in materials. The ‘how’ and ‘why’ of the failure of classical Physics, the waves of probability and the uncertainty involved in describing position and momentum of a particle is followed by a description of some elementary concepts like free electron and band theory of solids.
The magnetic and dielectric properties of solids, including the theory of semi-conductor physics and super-conductivity have adequately been touched upon by Prof Rajnni Kant.. At the end of each chapter, the reader will find solved as well as unsolved numerical problems and definition of the concepts used in each chapter. This shall facilitate the process of learning and understanding concepts related to the Physics of solids with much ease and comfort.
Overall this well-printed with good get-up book is a master-piece.
