JAMMU, Aug 9: Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) MP in Rajya Sabha (RS), Er Gulam Ali Khatana, has brought forth a crucial issue in the house regarding the challenges faced by individuals in obtaining Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) refunds.
In his special mention, MP Gulam Ali highlighted that certain taxpayers encounter income tax-related difficulties that go unnoticed by the Central Processing Centre (CPC) of the Income Tax Department.
He apprised the house that when these taxpayers approach their jurisdictional Income Tax Officer for assistance, they are met with an inability to take action, as the officers claim that such matters must be addressed by the CPC.
MP Gulam Ali cited an example where a taxpayer’s TDS, deducted by a Government Corporation or JMC, was not deposited during the applicable year in Jammu and Kashmir.
Despite the taxpayer accurately reporting their income and paying the correct taxes, the TDS credit was not received, he said.
Consequently, the Department issued a demand notice for the tax amount deducted from the individual’s income but not deposited by the Government Corporation during that year. This issue may extend to other assesses across India, as various departments and corporations might have replicated such actions, he observed.
Gulam Ali emphasized the need for an investigation into such cases, suspecting that TDS from the same quarter may have remained un-deposited, escaping the attention of the CPC, causing potential suffering for other taxpayers.
He urged the Government to gather data on such complaints and provide redressal.
