Kidnapper allegedly escapes from custody, family protests against police

*2 cops suspended, departmental enquiry ordered

DODA, June 18: A kidnapper escaped from the custody of Police Station Assar here today.
However, the family members of the abductor along with locals held protest alleging that police might have killed their kin to hush up the case as girl belongs to other religion.
As per police sources, few days back family members lodged a complaint with Police Station Assar regarding missing of their daughter.
A team from Assar Police Station recovered the girl alongwith her paramour namely Ravinder Singh alias Chotu, son of Kasho Ram of Village Ganota from Narwal area of District Jammu on June 15, 2019, sources said, adding that a case under FIR Number 21/19 under Section 366, 342 and 354 RPC was registered against Ravinder Kumar at Police Station Assar.
During the intervening night of June 16 and 17, the accused went to toilet and managed to escape from the custody through window, sources said, adding that initially the police denied the reports about the escape of the kidnapper, but later admitted, which created doubts in the minds of family members.
The family members of Ravinder Kumar joined by locals assembled outside Police Station Assar and held protest. They also blocked the Doda-Jammu highway. The protest was led by Shashi Goswani, State Executive Member BJP.
While speaking, one of the family members alleged that initially the police denied the reports about the escape of their kin, but later admitted, which created doubts in their minds.
“We are having apprehensions that our child has been killed by the police to hush up the case as the girl belongs to other religion”, he added.
On getting information, senior police officers rushed to the spot and pacified the protestors.
The protestors after serving three days time to the authorities for tracing out the youth and action against the culprits dispersed from the spot and vehicular movement was restored on the highway.
A senior police officer told the Excelsior that two cops have been suspended and a departmental enquiry has been ordered against Incharge SHO Police Station Thathri and other erring officials.
“A fresh case under Section 224 RPC has also been registered against the alleged kidnapper for escaping from the police custody”, he added.
