JAMMU, June 7: A Kissan Mahapanchayat was organized at tehsil headquarters of Majalta in Udhampur district undere the leadership of a noted social worker and UNESCO awardee Surat Singh Sumbria.
The members of farming community from various villages of tehsil Majalta including Katheel, Chatrari, Dhamma, Babey, Khoon and Sundla participated in the Mahapanchayat and reiterated their long pending genuine demands.
The Kisans demanded formal announcement for waiving of KCC loans in view of failure of their crops during the last incessant rains and floods etc. They called for provision of free seed and fertilizer to farmers so as to enable them sow their next crop and in the meantime free ration for atleast three months by the Government.
Expressing concern over neglect of far flung areas in the assessment of damages due to vagary of weather the meeting urged the administration to depute revenue officials to far off areas to make real assessment of the damages so that compensation could be provided to affected farmers.
They also demanded establishment of a cocoon Mandi at some central place so that cocoon rearers may not face any further difficulties.
Others who addressed the Mahapanchayat included Balram Singh, Hans Raj, Sher Singh, Rattan Chand, Rashpal Sharma and Joginder Singh.
