JAMMU, July 5: BJP Kissan Morcha president, Omi Khajuria has expressed concern over UT Government’s decision to recover Abhiyana (Irrigation Tax) from farmers of J&K the practice which as a policy matter was done away with by the previous BJP coalition Government in the erstwhile State.
In a statement issued here, today, Khajuria made an appeal to LG, Manoj Sinha urging him to reconsider the decision as recovering of the Irrigation Tax from the poor farmers will put them to problems. He said as a matter of policy and to provide a succour to farmers of the erstwhile State whose crops often fail due to vagaries of weather like drought, floods, hailstorm or untimely snow fall, the decision was taken by the BJP coalition Government to abandon the practice of charging water tax from the farmers.
He said that the decision taken by the then political Government was a well thought step as in J&K farmers face many hardships from time to time. Khajuria said in view of the problems being faced by the hapless farmers the Government should revoke the decision and provide a relief to the farmers from water tax and instead Government should take steps in doubling their income by 2024 as announced by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi to improve their economic condition.
