JAMMU, Feb 21: Revolutionizing knee replacement surgery scenario in India, where increasing number of young and active are falling victim to knee problems needing replacements, Dr Manuj Wadhwa, Director and Head, Max Elite Institute of Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement at Max Super Specialty Hospitals (MSSH), Mohali, Bathinda and Dehradun today announced the successful launch of Verilast 30-year wear performance knee system at MSSH, Mohali.
The first such surgery of country was done at MSSH, Mohali, by Dr Wadhwa with Verilast Knee System which was closest to the natural human knee. Interestingly it increases stability and comfort level and meets unaddressed needs of longevity of young and active patients undergoing implant surgeries.
Dr Wadhwa observed that the demand for knee replacements among age group 45-64 years had tripled since last two to three years. With Verilast Technology, patient suffering from knee arthritis and knee pain could look forward to joint replacement without any doubt or fear, he maintained.
He informed that Smith and Nephew Orthopaedics USA, a global leader in devices for joint replacement, has developed this revolutionary new customized knee implant that gives stability throughout range of motion from straight leg to bent knee.
Dr Wadhwa explained that on an average, conventional knee replacement would last 10-15 years in the times when longevity was multi-factorial dependent. This pressed for urgent need of complicated, costly and risky revision surgeries in the people who have undergone replacements at young age, he added.
With lab proven longevity of 30 years, these were long lasting knee joints wherein entire system has been especially designed and patented after taking into consideration discomfort of a large number of patients who have undergone knee implants, said Dr Wadhwa.
He further said that success in making knee replacements lasting a lifetime meant significant cost savings to healthcare system. Patients could avoid pain and downtime associated with revision surgery, he maintained.
