Secularism, democracy and tolerance are the needs of Indian society. It is the diversity of culture and life in this country that place heavy demand on values that do justice to people of different faiths, languages, beliefs and cultures. We cannot think of living in isolation or in an exclusivist fashion. That is neither our history nor our future. People of all shades have lived together in peace and harmony for centuries in the past. This tradition has to be carried forward by our new generations.
Inaugurating the book fair in New Delhi organized with Polish collaboration, the President rightly stated that a good and universal literature should produce worthy reading material for the children. We in this country need to pay attention to producing children’s literature. But taking into account the State of Jammu and Kashmir, we must admit that we have not been able to produce quality literature for children even after having lived as an independent people for last 65 years. It is not that we have not the potential for producing children literature, but we have to pay full attention to it and encourage writers and authors who can produce imaginative literature. After all we have a rich past and we also envisage a prosperous future. This country has the rare opportunity of developing along such political philosophy as ensures rapid growth of children literature and dissemination of knowledge. Knowledge has no boundaries and no dividing lines. Knowledge from all over the world has to be obtained and put to proper use. That is what should be the purpose of producing books for children.
