SRINAGAR, July 29: To tackle power pilferage and reduce losses in unmetered flat-rate areas, the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) today launched a calibrated load rationalization initiative based on actual electricity usage by domestic consumers.
A spokesperson for the KPDCL said strict directives have been issued to all Electric Sub Divisions to conduct door-to-door inspections, with a particular focus on high-value consumers whose agreed-upon load is significantly lower than their actual consumption.
The spokesperson highlighted that under the Government of India’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), projects involving the LT network and smart metering are being rolled out. The objective is to revolutionize the power sector, aiming to provide uninterrupted and affordable electricity to consumers. “All 13 loss reduction packages are underway across 10 districts in Kashmir Division. This includes the installation of DT substations and LT-AB cables,” the spokesperson said, urging consumers to assist the executing agencies in laying new distribution infrastructure and upgrading existing systems smoothly.
He said recent reports have indicated that personnel from executing agencies have been physically assaulted while installing LT-AB cables and removing bare conductors. “Complaints of such assaults have been received from Srinagar city, Ganderbal, Kupwara, and Budgam districts,” he said.
The spokesperson assured that these issues are being addressed with the support of the district and police administrations.
He said consumers are advised not to conflate load calibration with tariff hikes, as changes in tariffs fall under the jurisdiction of the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission.
The spokesperson clarified that load revisions are based on actual consumption patterns, with many consumers’ agreed-upon loads being much lower than their actual usage.
