SRINAGAR, Aug 4: Scores of faculty members, scholars and students of Zoology Department of University of Kashmir (KU) today staged protest against the mismanagement in their department while the Head of the Department says that she believes in work culture that is lacking in the faculty.
The protesters said that the department was facing worst crisis from last one year after Professor Ulfat Jan assumed the charge of Head of Department (HoD) due to her inefficiency to manage the department.
They said there is chaos and confusion in the Zoology Department after she became its head. Her autocratic way of doing things has not only upset some faculty members, scholars and students including non teaching employees, but also pushed the department worst crisis,” the protesting faculty said.
Claiming that when the situation turned out of control earlier this year, varsity constituted a committee of Dean Research, Dean Faculty of Biological Sciences, Dean College Department Council, Director DIQA under the chairmanship of the Dean Academic Affairs (Present VC) with the standing instructions that a meeting be held of all the faculty members along with HoD and a report be submitted immediately.
“When the committee found mis-governance in the department under the leadership of Prof. Ulfat, Dean Biological Sciences was requested to monitor the department on weekly basis,” they said.
They alleged that the HoD has made a strong lobby in the department and was harassing the scholars who didn’t bow before her for her vested interests. “Genius and deserving students were sidelined while as her favorite candidates have been enjoying the departmental services,” they said, adding, toppers of first and second semesters didn’t found their place among the toppers after she assumed the charge. Instead some favorite candidates were declared toppers after giving them leniency in their papers.
Professor Ulfat Jan, however, said that she believes in work culture and tried her best to make everybody accountable in the department, which goes against the will of some faculty members. “I directed faculty members and scholars to believe in original research and work hard for that, but that didn’t suit their nefarious designs, that was why they are trying to mislead people,” she said.
“I am ready to face any enquiry and if found anything wrong against me, I will quit my job,” she said.
