SRINAGAR, Apr 5: Several villages in Handwara town of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district lack basic facilities including proper health care, drinking water and have dilapidated roads, causing immense hardships to the residents.
People said that villages including Lachipora, Rainawari, Krumhura and other areas san clean drinking water, proper health care facilities and macadamized roads causing immense hardships to them.
Mohammad Sultan Bhat, a resident of Rainawari village said that they are facing serious problems due to the lackadaisical approach of the Government towards the villages.”The condition of the road from Lachipora to Krumhura is bad. The road stretch, which is at least 10 kilometers long, is dotted with potholes and bumps due to which the frequent commuters are facing tremendous inconvenience every day,” he said.
Bhat said the road is in complete shambles as authorities have failed to repair and subsequently macadamize it despite repeated pleas. “Several people including the children have developed respiratory problems due to inhaling of dust emanating from the road,” he said.
Ghulam Qadir, another resident said that they have to use water from the wells which is very dangerous as various animals including dogs drink water from these wells. “People are facing drinking water crisis here and the district administration is not bothered about our miseries. PHE Department has failed to provide drinking water despite water pipes being laid down in the villages,” he said.
The villagers also alleged that the area sans health care facilities as they are provided with one health Sub Centre in Krumhura village which is in shambles. “There are no health care facilities in our village. A health Sub Centre was provided that too is operating from a rented room and without basic medicines available there,” Bashir Ahmad, a resident of Krumhura said.
People of the villages lamented that despite assurance from the authorities last year, nothing happened till date. “Last year, we went to the authorities and told them about the hardships people are facing. They assured us that they will look into the matter but till date nothing happened,” Abdul Jabbar, a resident said.
District Commissioner, Kupwara, Khalid Jehangir while expressing ignorance about the issues faced by villagers said that the issues never came into his notice. He, however, assured to look into the issues.
