Ladakh highway, roads to far-flung areas in Kashmir remain closed

SRINAGAR: The National Highway, linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country was through for one-way traffic while the Srinagar-Leh National Highway and roads to dozens of far-flung and remote villages in border areas remained closed due to snow.
Despite very bad road condition, particularly in the landslide-prone areas, the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was through for one-way traffic.
Today vehicles were allowed from Jammu to Srinagar, official sources said, adding that no vehicle was allowed from opposite direction for smooth traffic movement. They said trucks loaded with essentials, particularly fresh vegetables and petrol and diesel, besides carrying passengers, left Jammu this morning for the Kashmir valley. Similarly, vehicles will ply from Srinagar to Jammu tomorrow subject to weather and road condition. However, the Mughal road, connecting the south Kashmir with Jammu region remained closed due to heavy snowfall during the past about two months.
The road was declared closed due to slippery road conditions and snowfall.
The National Highway, connecting the Ladakh region with Kashmir valley, also remained closed since December last year due to accumulation of about eight to ten feet of snow at several places, including Zojila pass.
However, a portion of the 434-km-long highway from Srinagar to Sonamarg on this side of the Zojila pass and Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia, to Kargil and Leh was through for traffic.
Meanwhile, dozens of far-flung and remote areas in the frontier district of Kupwara and Bandipora also remained cut off with their respective district and tehsil headquarters due to snowfall. (AGENCIES)
