JAMMU, Jan 9: Radha Krishna Mathur, Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Ladakh today met Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and was understood to have discussed with him different aspects of the situation in the newly created UT including situation along Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China and Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan.
As a Defence Minister, Rajnath had paid his first visit to Siachen Glacier, the highest battle field in the world falling in the Union Territory of Ladakh. As a Home Minister also in Modi 1.0 Government, Rajnath had visited Ladakh number of times.
While there was no official word on the issues taken up by Mathur in his meeting with the Defence Minister, sources said the Lieutenant Governor was likely to have briefed Rajnath on the situation prevailing on LAC with China and LoC with Pakistan. India’s frontiers with both the neighbours are quite peaceful.
Though some incursions do take place on the LAC with China in Eastern Ladakh but they are resolved amicably by the Commanders of two countries as per the prescribed mechanism.
However, LoC with Pakistan has been entirely peaceful since 1999 Kargil war and no major untoward incident has been reported from there.
During his previous visits to the Union Capital, Mathur had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah and discussed issues related to the Union Territory of Ladakh with them.
It may be mentioned here that youth in Leh have been protesting demanding Sixth Schedule status to Ladakh, which has virtually been ruled out by the Central Government in response to a question in Lok Sabha during its November-December session.
Moreover, according to sources, there were several other issues pending in the Union Territory of Ladakh which have to be addressed by the Central Government.
Ladakh was created as the Union Territory on October 31 after bifurcation of the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir. The special Constitutional provisions of Jammu and Kashmir was abrogated on August 5 by the Central Government.
